Police were called to the illegal Travellers’ encampment in Montrose on Wednesday night after reports of people doing handbrake turns and wheelspins in vans.
Councillor David May phoned the police at 10pm after a resident informed him of the disturbance.
The incident took place on a rugby pitch owned by Angus Council which is next to the Travellers’ encampment at the town’s East Links.
The Travellers, who pitched up at the end of last week for a Christian festival, have started to leave the site.
A giant marquee set up for the event organised by Light and Life Gypsy Church has been taken down.
Around 50 caravans set up on the site adjacent to the Montrose Medal Course but by Thursday afternoon only around a dozen remained, with a couple of Travellers collecting litter in the area.
Mr May said: “A resident contacted me last night to say they were doing wheelies on the rugby pitch, which has caused massive divots.
“I immediately made contact with the police and urged them to get down to the site as quickly as possible.”
The pitch and putt course beside Montrose Golf Links has been out of action since Saturday.
A session with junior players was stopped after it was discovered caravans had blocked off the first hole.
A spokesman for Angus Council said they were aware of damage to the public rugby pitch.
She said: “We are aware of the incident and are liaising with police”.
A spokesman for Tayside Police said: “Police attended and made full inquiry and appropriate action was taken.”
