Open day lifting the lid on Arbroath’s Cold War past
ByThe Courier Reporter
Enthusiasts are lifting the lid on the town's Cold War past.
Military history enthusiasts took the chance to delve into Arbroath’s Cold War past during a weekend open day at the town’s ‘secret bunker’.
The Royal Observer Corps monitoring post is sited near the town’s Red Lion caravan park and is now privately owned by Cheryl Stewart.
The ROC was initially stationed on top of the Keptie Pond water tower during World War Two but the underground station was later established and remained operational until the beginning of the 1990s.
It now houses a small museum with Observer Corps and WW2 memorabilia, with all visitors going down the hatch into the nuclear bunker receiving a certificate.
The site is only open a few times a year and those interested in a tour should e-mail cheryl.stewart@gmail.com.
