Vandalism at one of Arbroath’s most iconic buildings has been described as “appalling”.
Arbroath councillor David Fairweather has spoken of his disgust after the former Arbroath water tower, located beside Keptie Pond, was defaced.
Graffiti has been daubed on the sign for the building, which dates back to 1885. The Banksy-style stencil shows a man in a suit on television.
The matter was reported to Angus Council, which has vowed to take swift action.
Mr Fairweather said: “This type of appalling behaviour is not acceptable at all.
“The water tower is one of the most prominent buildings in Arbroath, which people see if they are at Keptie Pond.
“I will be contacting the council to see how quickly we can get this removed.
“There has been a couple of instances of vandalism in Arbroath recently and it’s a trend I’d like to see nipped in the bud.
“If anyone has any information or suspicions they should contact the police.”
A council spokesman said: “Our officers will visit the site shortly to assess the damage caused by this mindless vandalism and remove the paint.
“It is disappointing to see this anti-social behaviour that is not only unsightly but costs the taxpayer money to clean up.
“Anyone who has any information about this incident, or who wishes to discuss any issues relating to vandalism, is asked to please call the council’s ACCESSLine on 08452 777 778 or contact the police on 101.”
