Angus police commander Gordon Milne says he is aware of concerns about irresponsible driving on an Arbroath street after the issue was raised by a local resident.
Neil Stirling warned there could be a tragedy on Keptie Street unless drivers cut their speed.
Mr Stirling, a member of the Timmergreens Action Group, said it has been an issue for many years.
He said the area is especially bad at the newsagent’s and chemist’s shop as vehicles pick up speed on the brae.
The hazard is just down from the Lochlands Street turn-off where there is parking on both sides of the street.
Mr Stirling said that it makes it almost impossible for people to cross safely given the difficulties of knowing what’s coming.
“I struggled to help my mum across the road and I couldn’t imagine her attempting that alone,” he said.
“Something needs to be done about slowing down the speed of traffic but it’s been an issue for many years.
“I’m worried that someone could get badly hurt if we don’t slow vehicles down on that stretch.”
Chief Inspector Milne said it is a long-running issue which he is well aware of.
“I was traffic inspector at Forfar when the pedestrian crossing issue in Keptie Street first came up and I was present at various meetings and site visits,” he said.
“We are aware of the concerns and we will give as much attention to the problem as possible.
“We do try to educate and encourage drivers as much as possible and sometimes where evidence exists, we use enforcement action as well.
“We work closely with Angus Council roads department to monitor areas of community concern and I know this area has been considered at various times in the past.”
