A 42-year-old man found dead in Montrose has been named as John Higgins.

Police Scotland confirmed Mr Higgins was found in the communal close of his address in Christie’s Lane on Sunday.

Officers remain keen to speak to anyone who met with or spoke to Mr Higgins on Saturday evening or in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner are now investigating the death, which is being treated by the police as unexplained

Mr Higgins had been out in Montrose socialising and watching football on Saturday.

A local bar manager said he was a regular at Sharky’s Bar and Diner in George Street.

Carl Glanville said: “He had been out having a few drinks. He wasn’t any worse off than anyone else.

“He was a happy-go-lucky guy and was friends with everyone. He liked socialising and was very popular.

“We were told he had fallen and died – all of his friends are devastated.”

It is understood Mr Higgins, originally from England, had lived in Montrose most of his life.

A spokesman for the PIRC said: “The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service (COPFS) has directed the Police Investigations & Review Commissioner (PIRC) to carry out an independent investigation into police contact with a 42-year-old man prior to the discovery of his body at a residential address in Montrose on August 9, 2015.”

Police Scotland say there are no suspicious circumstances and an initial sudden death report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.
