A Tayside pensioner has died after falling from a ladder.
William Sutherland, 77, from Carnoustie, passed away in hospital the day after the tragic fall.
A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service confirmed they had attended an emergency call-out to an address in Carnoustie.
The spokesman said: “We received a 999 call to say a 77-year-old male had fallen from a ladder.
“It was understood he had received chest and abdominal injuries as a result of the fall on Friday.
“He was taken by ambulance to Ninewells Hospital.”
The spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service added Mr Sutherland died in Ninewells the following day.
His family paid tribute to the pensioner, who was well known in the Carnoustie area. They said he loved working on vintage cars.
He is survived by his wife Margaret and daughters Susan Fyffe and Elaine MacVeigh.
The pensioner, who was known as Wadie, was described as an “active” person.
Mrs Fyffe said the family were left devastated. She said they were finding it difficult to come to terms with what had happened.
She added: “This was a tragic accident and my dad will be very sadly missed by the whole family.
“He was a private and quiet family man. He loved to spend a lot of time working on vintage cars.
“The family used to go to local vintage car rallies.”
Mr Sutherland and his brother Alistair, along with another brother Kenneth, were well known in Carnoustie where they ran Sutherland Brothers Haulage Contractors.
Mrs Sutherland said her husband had taken semi-retirement when he was 63 following an illness.
She added: “After he retired he and his brother Alistair spent a lot of their spare time renovating and competing their vintage cars.
“My husband never really stopped working.
“He was always very active and doing something and he loved restoring his vintage cars.”
Mr Sutherland’s funeral is to be held tomorrow and a collection is set to be taken for Cancer Research at Ninewells Hospital.
