A group of teenagers have raised a four-figure sum in memory of a friend who died last year.
Arbroath girl Shannan Stringer, 13, died after an epileptic fit on August 8.
Four of her friends have presented £1,312 to charity as a means of keeping the former Arbroath Academy pupil’s memory alive.
Dionne Geddes, 13, raised money through an eight-hour darts marathon and her friends Chilene Falconer, Robyn Towns and Chantell Mitllari took part in a sponsored silence to help raise money for Epilepsy Scotland.
Dionne’s mother, Marie Coutts, said the four girls wanted to do something “to remember Shannan by”.
Ms Coutts, 38, said: “They were all pals with Shannan, and Dionne had asked the other three girls if they wanted to do anything for her.
“They came up with the idea of a four-hour sponsored silence.
“The three girls raised £240, and the rest was raised by Dionne by doing her eight-hour darts marathon and a huge raffle.”
Shannan had spent time outside school participating in classes and shows put on by local theatre production company LimeLight.
Co-owners Michael Carlin and Chris O’Mara renamed the company’s Showstopper award in honour of Shannan as they believed that the ethos behind it determination, effort, and constantly working as hard as possible to achieve and be the best they can was personified by Shannan.
Shannan’s father Martin Stringer previously told The Courier about how his daughter was “his life” and how devastated he was after her death.
The darts marathon was attended by members of Shannan’s family, who Dionne had approached for their blessing.
Ms Coutts added: “A lot of Shannan’s family were there to back her.
“She’d asked for permission to do it and they backed her 100%.”
The marathon took place at the Commercial Inn and publican Christine Fergusson presented the donation at Arbroath Academy.
Ms Coutts said her daughter has raised more than £4,600 for local groups in recent years. Previous causes include the local lifeboat and air cadets group, and events such as a six-hour “danceathon” and supermarket bag packing.
