Police have renewed a money scam warning after attempted weekend strikes in Angus.
Shops in Brechin and Edzell were targeted by what are understood to be eastern European women.
The matter remains under investigation but has prompted a call for shopkeepers to be on their guard against the “ringing the changes” scam.
This involves staff exchanging substantial sums of money to a seemingly innocent customer who asks for change and uses some well-rehearsed conversation and sleight of hand to take full advantage of the shop worker. Police have issued warnings about the scam in recent months in the wake of earlier incidents.
The scammers often use busy periods to confuse or distract counter staff.
“Staff have to be alert and suspicious to any customer requesting large denomination notes to be changed, or those who wish to cancel transactions once cash is on the counter,” a spokesman said.
“Where this happens consider calling on another colleague for assistance, or if in any doubt politely decline the request and notify the police.”
Anyone who has information that could assist the police is being urged to contact Tayside Division on 101 or speak to any officer.
