Tealing’s voice could be lost forever following the demise of its community council, it has been claimed.
Kay Dennis, who served on the community council for more than 10 years, said she fears the organisation could be gone for good.
Elections are held every four years but Tealing’s community council bit the dust due to a lack of interest after only one person applied for the four roles.
Only 21 of the county’s 25 community councils managed to attain at least the required minimum number of nominees despite the closing date being extended by a week.
“I think it’s sad that Tealing is without a community council,” said Kay.
“The frustrating part is that often our work is unseen and under-appreciated.
“We are the voice between the community and the council and it would be a shame to lose that.
“I worry that once it is lost if we would ever get it back again?”
Community councils, which have been in existence since 1975, have a statutory role in planning and licensing.
Tealing Community Council previously fought, and has continued to fight, against wind and solar farm developments in the village.
“If there is no community council then who is going to fight against them?” said Kay.
“We played a vital role in making residents aware of what is going on in their community.
“If people had any complaints or concerns we would take them up on their behalf.
“We would back people up as a community council and provide a bigger voice now that’s gone.
“It is frustrating at times and I can understand why people haven’t stood but it is also hugely rewarding.”
Tealing, Forfar and Monifieth joined trouble-hit Arbroath, which has been without a community council since 2013, in failing to get enough nominations.
Kay said she will be doing all she can to try to re-establish the community council if there is enough interest from the public.
Monifieth and Sidlaw councillor Margaret Thomson said it was very disappointing that Monifieth and Tealing will no longer have a body to represent the interests of their communities.
She said: “They will be both sadly missed. They were both involved in a lot of initiatives in both communities.
“I personally would like to thank all past community councillors for all their hard work.”
