High-speed police chase through Arbroath after driver failed to stop

An Angus man sped away from police after being pulled over for having faulty brake lights, a court has heard.

Matthew Knight, 27, of Millfield Road in Arbroath, was stopped on June 23 this year after being spotted with two brake lights out.

He then sparked a police chase through the town which resulted in him driving at speeds of up to 60mph.

Knight appeared at Arbroath Sheriff Court on Tuesday, when he admitted the charge and also failing to stop for police, driving under the influence and driving without insurance.

The court heard how police had been in an unmarked car on a mobile patrol that night.

Depute fiscal Hazel Anderson said: “Two brake lights on the accused’s car were not working and the police followed him, looking for a safe place to stop.

“The car came to a full stop and one of the officers got out. As he approached the vehicle Mr Knight revved the engine twice and took off at high speed.

“Assistance was summoned and the officers followed him on to Queen’s Drive. He passed a nightclub which was busy with patrons at speeds of around 40mph.

“There was a drunk male on the road and officers had to drop their speed to manoeuvre. Mr Knight did not slow.

“He swerved on to Burnside Drive without stopping at the junction. The police car’s blue lights were flashing throughout.

“He went the wrong way round a roundabout and then accelerated. Police officers noted their vehicle was travelling in excess of 60mph.

“When Knight eventually stopped he was removed from the car and told officers he was ‘over the limit’.”

Knight was found to have 68 mics of alcohol in 100ml of his breath, almost twice the legal limit.

Sheriff Gregor Murray deferred sentence for the preparation of reports but disqualified him from driving in the meantime.
