Two serious road accidents were behind Angus Council’s decision to reduce the speed limit through a growing village on the outskirts of Dundee.
Locals in Kingennie are “delighted” by the limit being reduced from 40 to 30mph.
The local authority also chose to reduce limits at the northern village of Hillside, by Montrose, and on the Forfar road leaving Arbroath.
The entire stretch of the B961 Drumsturdy Road through Kingennie has dropped to 30mph, following an “emotional call” to local councillor Craig Fotheringham.
This was after a crash in April, which saw Steven Young’s car end up in one garden while a wooden post went through the window of a neighbouring property.
The 24-year-old offshore electrician admitted driving at more than four times the legal limit and is expected to be sentenced next month.
Mr Fotheringham told members of the local authority’s communities committee the accident solidified Kingennie’s right to a lower speed limit as a built-up area.
He said: “I received what I can only describe as a very sincere and very emotional call from a constituent on Drumsturdy Road who was in tears at the end.
“The driver crashed through her wall, snapped a fence post, which catapulted through her window and landed inches from where she was sleeping.
“About a week or 10 days later, a similar incident happened again where a car ended up on its roof in a garden just along from that resident’s house.
“The residents will be absolutely delighted by this.”
The work of Police Scotland and roads department staff was congratulated by councillors.
Councillor David May welcomed the 30mph limit on Main Road, Hillside, following residents’ concerns over the speed of traffic on the C37 heading south into the village.
“The big issue for most of us is enforcing these limits,” he said.
“The trouble is we rely so much on police and they can’t be everywhere all the time.”
Councillors also approved recommendations to move the 40mph buffer zone north of Arbroath to a point on the A933 just north of Woodfield House and the Ashbrook Nursery.
