A man was left fighting for his life last night following a serious assault in Arbroath.
Tayside Police were called to the town’s Russell Street at around 3am on Sunday following a report of the incident where a 29-year-old male sustained serious head injuries.
He was taken to Ninewells Hospital, where his condition was last night described as critical.
Police cordoned off the junction of Russell Street and Elliot Street before beginning their investigations, with CID and uniform officers on the scene.
Inspector David Scott said: “Officers were called to an address in Arbroath following an incident at around 3am where a 29-year-old male was left with serious head injuries.
“The man was taken to Ninewells for treatment and his condition was critical.
“CID officers are carrying out inquiries and the situation is progressing. We are conducting house-to-house questioning and looking at CCTV.”
Residents said they were shocked to wake up on Sunday morning and find their street was the centre of a crime scene.
Police tape cut off traffic to the junction from every angle but residents on all sides of the divide said they had not heard anything during the night and remained just as puzzled throughout the day.
However, news of the incident has unsettled people in the quiet area.
One home-owner, who asked not to be named, said: “This is pretty strange. This is such a quiet area and I didn’t hear anything last night.
“I just woke up and came out to see all this but I don’t know what’s happened.”
Tayside Police confirmed last night that no arrests had been made in connection with the incident and investigations into the circumstances are ongoing.
