A former football club director and sport historian has died after a short illness, aged 85.
Many of the older brigade of Forfar Athletic supporters would have been saddened to hear at the end of last week of the passing of lifelong supporter Doug Soutar.
Mr Soutar was not only a supporter, however. A born and bred Forfarian, he twice served the club as a director firstly in the mid-1980s and for a further short spell in the early 1990s.
On both occasions his wise counselling on many matters was much valued by his fellow board members.
He will also be well remembered as the co-author of the club’s centenary history, giving up so much of his time researching in particular the early years of the Loons from 1885 onwards for what turned out to be a sell-out publication.
Mr Soutar remained a season ticket holder and Station Park regular right up until last season.
He was a proud pupil of Forfar Academy and went on to study at St Andrews University before entering the teaching profession, reaching headmaster status before becoming a principal lecturer at Dundee College of Education.
A keen supporter of Strathmore Cricket Club, Mr Soutar was also a playing member of Forfar Golf Club as well as a past master of Lodge Glamis.
He is survived by his wife of many years Pat, daughter Fiona and son Fraser and their families.
The thoughts of all connected with Forfar Athletic Football Club are with them at this sad time.
Mr Soutar’s funeral service will take place in the East and Old Parish Church on Friday at 1.15pm, followed by interment at Forfar Cemetery.
