Montrose oil worker’s taunting of pensioner ‘appalling’

A sheriff told a man who filmed himself sexually taunting a vulnerable pensioner his behaviour was “appalling” and that he has too much money to spend on alcohol.

Kevin Hector, 24, of Burnside Place, Montrose, appeared before Arbroath Sheriff Court on Tuesday having previously admitted the charge of making the sickening video and posting it on Facebook.

His victim was a profoundly deaf woman with learning disabilities who Hector had lured to his friend’s house.

In the video he asked if she was aroused and if she would perform a sex act on him.

The woman was unaware of what was unfolding because of her disabilities, and it was only when horrified family members saw the footage that the offence was brought to light.

Considering a suitable punishment, Sheriff Peter Paterson said the offshore worker has a “substantial disposable income which he spends on alcohol” and he wanted to curb his social life.

He said: “This is appalling behaviour from someone who should know better because of your education work.

“I want you to grow up. You can’t go out every weekend making a nuisance of yourself with alcohol.”

He added Hector is “a young man who has too much money to spend”.

He said: “It seems to me the way to punish Mr Hector is to restrict his liberty so he can’t enjoy himself outside work from Thursday to Sunday.”

Sheriff Paterson said he did not wish the order to interfere with Hector’s work but he did want to interfere with his social life, which he said was at the root of the offence.

He deferred sentence for a week so social workers can speak to custodial services about making a restriction of liberty order workable around Hector’s employment.

Hector’s defence agent told the court that since his last court appearance his client has made a £200 donation to the British Deaf Association.

He added after media coverage of Hector’s last court appearance was anonymously handed to his new employer his job was put at risk and he was concerned about how the type of punishment would look to his boss.

Hector will hear his fate when he appears before the court again on Tuesday.
