A “Little Britain” mobility scooter thief who led police on a low speed chase in an Angus village has been banned from the road for three years.
Andrew McConnachie tried to outrun officers at a speed of just a few miles an hour after pinching the scooter from outside a disabled man’s house in Inverkeilor, between Arbroath and Montrose.
The Aberdeen 47-year-old had been thrown off a bus in the village after being sick during the journey but when the coach driver turned round he saw McConnachie making off down the street on the stolen scooter and dialled 999.
Officers who raced to the village then found the accused aboard the machine, weaving around the road.
McConnachie, of West North Street in Aberdeen was found to be twice the legal drink-drive limit and ended up in the cells before appearing from custody at Forfar.
Defence solicitor Nick Markowski said the scene of McConnachie being pursued by a police vehicle with its blue lights flashing, while weaving around the road at just a few miles per hour would have been like a Little Britain sketch.
Sheriff Pino Di Emidio also imposed a one-year Community Payback Order requiring McConnachie to complete 70 hours unpaid work.
