Investigation after man breaks legs in farm accident

A probe has been launched after a man broke both his legs in an industrial accident on an Angus farm.

The Health and Safety Executive confirmed it is looking into Friday’s incident at East Mains of Colliston Farm, in which a construction worker fell up to 15 feet after being hit by a stone.

The 18-year-old was the subject of a joint rescue effort as fire crews helped paramedics lift the man from the embankment.

A trauma team and paramedics attended shortly after 9.30am and called the fire service for assistance at 9.42am, at which point the Arbroath crew attended.

It is understood a large stone dropped on the man, who was working at the site for Carnoustie building firm D J Laing.

Jill Barber of the executive told The Courier: “I can confirm that HSE is aware of the incident, and we are at the preliminary inquiries stage at this time.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said it took emergency crews over an hour to get the man into an ambulance.

He said: “We had a report of a male injured after bricks had fallen on him. He sustained leg injuries and we transported him to Ninewells Hospital.

“He had fallen down an embankment about 10 to 15 feet. It took approximately an hour and 10 minutes to get the man into the ambulance.”
