An elderly couple had a lucky escape when a fire raged through their home on Sunday.
The man and woman had to flee their property in Glenesk Avenue, Montrose, after a fire started in a first-floor bedroom at around 10am.
They took refuge in a neighbour’s home as the flames destroyed the room and spread to other parts of the house.
Fire crews were quickly on the scene to tackle what station manager Paul Robertson described as “well-developed” fire.
He told The Courier: “The first attending officer sent in four breathing apparatus wearers to tackle the fire, which had started in a first-floor bedroom, and quickly extinguished the well-developed fire using two hose reel jets.”
He added that the presence of smoke detectors in the couple’s home was a life-saving factor.
“We noted that there was a smoke detector fitted downstairs, but not on the first floor,” he said.
“If there had been one we could have detected this even sooner.
“The crews managed to mitigate the effects of the fire through their quick actions but, albeit this ended with no injuries, it could have been a lot worse.
“We would urge anyone if you don’t have a working smoke detector you can get a free home safety visit and we can help you make a fire action plan.
“Just speak to your local station and they will sort it out at no cost.”
