Angus Council is controversially considering reintroducing parking charges for the first time in two decades.
Council chiefs have been warned the move could impact on tourism and further damage the county’s already struggling high streets.
Free parking in Angus has previously been hailed by councillors who believe it brings tourism benefits.
However, the issue is back on the agenda at the local authority’s communities committee on Tuesday as the council considers how to meet the cost of parking enforcement.
North East MSP Alex Johnstone said bringing in parking charges for the first time in two decades would be “short-sighted and counter-productive.”
He said: “At a time when our High Streets are struggling to compete against online retailers, the idea of introducing car parking charges in Angus is short sighted and counter productive.”
