Montrose residents may have some of their shopping prayers answered, as supermarket chain Aldi has submitted plans to build a new store in the town.
The German giant would move on to the site of the former Co-op in Basin View, which closed on August 1 with the loss of 37 jobs.
The new venture would restore 30 full-time posts, according to the firm.
A spokesman said: “We consider that a fresh, contemporary food store will provide the area with an improved choice for shopping, which complements existing facilities in the local area, with the potential to bolster trade as well as create local jobs.
“The high-quality and welcoming design of the building will help improve the local street scene, whilst providing a modern and active frontage to Basin View.
“This will bring valuable investment and a modern approach to food retail, whilst continuing to service the needs of Montrose.”
The Courier revealed Sainsbury’s axed plans for a £10 million Montrose store in July, almost four years after getting the go-ahead for a site on Brechin Road.
Aldi’s proposed opening hours are between 8am and 10pm, Monday to Saturday, and 9am to 7pm on Sundays.
Montrose’s former Co-op had been in business in the town since January 2010 and the former Somerfield building had been retailing for 37 years.
Montrose councillor David May said: “It is great news for the town, and especially to shoppers, that Aldi are still coming to Montrose.
“Shoppers in the town and local area have indicated to me that they wanted more competition for what was already in existence, as they would provide more choice and help to bring prices down.
“Once Aldi is built, this will provide more jobs for the town.”
