The necessity of foodbanks in Angus is a “sad indictment” of today’s society, according to a local charity figure.
And more than 900 people have been fed by local volunteers since October last year. Angus Foodbank chairman Derek Marshall spoke after his organisation secured two premises for food distribution in Forfar.
“This is not success because we’re growing this is a sad indictment of society,” he said.
“The only time we’ll be successful as a foodbank is when the doors are closed.”
Angus Council has agreed to a peppercorn rent of £1 for the former SNP premises at Craig O’Loch Road and a former shop at The Cross. The current base in Kirriemuir will continue to be used for storage.
“Angus being such a large area is a challenge for us. Even with 50 volunteers it’s still not enough,” he added.
Angus Foodbank manager Malcolm Brown said a headquarters in the former office will open in January.
