Brechin’s community cinema which recently admitted it was “one or two poor shows away from having to call it a day” has secured its immediate future.
The new cinema has been “surviving” despite disappointing audience numbers in its first six months.
However, funding from NHS Tayside’s Community Innovation Fund will now give it “some breathing space”.
Chairman Graham Donald said the funding would allow them to grow and test out various approaches in presenting and extending the range of films shown to the Brechin community.
Audience numbers recently picked up at the start of this month with the cinema’s most successful screening day since its launch back in April.
Mr Donald said: “We endeavour to pick new film releases that we think our audience’s would appreciate sometimes we do not quite get that right but we try.
“We would welcome any suggestions for upcoming releases and have screening slots from February onwards.”
Next month the cinema will be showing sing-along Frozen, Pan and Spectre.
The Good Dinosaur, Star Wars and Sunset Song are planned next year.
Mr Donald said: “Mention must be made to the continued gratitude we have for all our volunteers who continue to turn up and act as ushers whilst also going beyond this and dressing up in some interesting costumes.
“Also thanks to the Attic youth project who provide a valuable and affordable tuck shop for our audience and Newsplus for the point of sale for our sing-along tickets.”
