The loss of 37 jobs at an Angus supermarket site has been described as a “blow to the town”.
Aldi has confirmed that it will open a store in Montrose after buying the Co-operative building in Basin View.
The move is also believed to affect staff at the clothing store Peacock’s.
Employees were told the Co-op and Peacock’s would close in August with the loss of all jobs.
They were reportedly informed that Aldi had bought the shops over and the buildings would be demolished to make way for a newly-built supermarket.
A spokesman for the Co-operative said: “The consideration to sell the store is in no way a reflection on the hard work and commitment from colleagues working at the Montrose store.”
Local councillor David May said: “The closure is a blow to the town and the staff and their families, as many of them have been working there for a long period of time.
“This decision has been made by the national organisation and I can only hope the staff are able to get another job soon.”
