A joint Angus operation will see the “swift” removal of unsafe bonfires from public parks in the lead-up to bonfire night.
Angus Council and Police Scotland’s Tayside Division will remove structures built on council land and have issued a reminder not to build fires without permission.
Neighbourhood services convener Donald Morrison said this year is the third in which the local authority has worked with emergency services.
He said: “This is primarily in the interest of safety and to protect the environment and we would ask residents to be particularly vigilant at this time of year.
“It really is important that we get the message across that although November 5 is a night of fun and celebration, the use and abuse of bonfires bring a number of dangers which can end in tragedy.”
Chief Inspector for Angus, Gordon Milne urged residents to attend organised displays, and to report unauthorised bonfires to police by calling 101.
“Unauthorised bonfires can lead to damaged property and also increase the risk of injury,” he said.
“The safety of our communities is our main priority and we will deal firmly with anyone who poses a risk to others and their property.”
Members of the public who have concerns about bonfires can call the council on 08452 777 778.
