Families who visit a dark Tayside forest will encounter a timeless world of dragons, trolls and fairies with a 21st Century twist this year.

The augmented reality adventure DragonQuest comes to Monikie Country Park in October and tickets go on sale today.

Theatre company Vision Mechanics is creating a first-of-its-kind event that will see the woods teem with magical creatures.

And animation graduates from Duncan of Jordanstone in Dundee have created sets and illusions to leave a lasting impression on visitors.

Visitors will witness the first use of augmented reality, which utilises smartphone and tablet apps for an additional facet to the performance, in live theatre.

Despite the use of technology, artistic director Symon Macintyre said the performance is not just for the “tech-savvy”.

“It’s a great story of romance, magic and mystery that you, as an audience, discover as you walk in the woods on an autumn evening,” he said.

“With or without a smartphone, DragonQuest is an event for the whole family.”

Ticket holders can download an app to reveal a world of magical creatures which they can scan and snap for social media, friends and family.

DragonQuest has been supported by Creative Scotland, EventScotland, the VisitScotland events directorate, and the local authority.

Angus Council’s vice-convener of communities, Jeanette Gaul, said: “Monikie Country Park offers a fabulous setting for visitors to experience this magical performance.”

Jim Clarkson of VisitScotland said: “Every year, Angus welcomes visitors from all across the globe but I’m certain this is the first time we’ve played host to so many different mythical creatures.”

The attraction opens on October 7 and will run until November 1, excluding Mondays.

Tickets go on sale at the Webster Memorial Theatre in Arbroath, at 1pm.
