Kirriemuir vandals have come under fire over a spate of damage across the town.
Popular areas including the Peter Pan playpark at the Hill and Kirrie Den have been recently targeted and those responsible have been warned they could be putting their own safety at risk after toppling drystone dyking.
The damage has infuriated councillors, who said the work of the vandals is a double whammy for locals and the authority.
Kirrie councillor Ronnie Proctor was dismayed after surveying damage that has put one piece of equipment at the playpark on the Hill out of commission and led to further deterioration of the dyke on the popular path leading to the town.
“It is terrible that the council is spending money on providing facilities such as the park and regenerating the centre of the town and yet mindless people are forcing us to spend money on needless repairs,” he said.
“Not only that, they are endangering themselves and possibly other young children by pulling down stones from these drystone dykes and breaking glass all over the place. If some of these stones toppled over on to a youngster they could easily be badly hurt,” added Mr Proctor.
“These facilities are very popular and we’ve have some great weather recently for people to get out and enjoy places like the Hill and the Den, but this sort of thing just spoils it for everyone.
“I hope we can get the community to keep an eye out and track down those responsible.”
A spokesperson for Angus Council said Wilkie’s shelter, stone walls, the Den and the Hill play area had all been targeted in recent weeks.
The authority’s leisure spokesperson, Councillor Jeanette Gaul, said: “This trail of destruction and vandalism is costing the council tax payer dearly.
“It is particularly disheartening to see this destruction at times of severe budget cuts. Funds will have to be diverted to pay for these repairs which could have been put towards other services.
“This is mindless destruction and I would urge anyone who has any information about this latest incident, or who wishes to discuss any issues relating to vandalism, to call the council ACCESSLine on 08452 777778 or contact the police on 101.”
