A stolen car used in a Mearns cash machine break-in bid has been recovered by police.
Officers found the white Audi S3 abandoned in a wooded area in Methlick, Aberdeenshire, as part of an ongoing investigation into attempted thefts from ATMs in Stonehaven and Inverurie in the early hours of Monday.
The vehicle, bearing the false registration plate YP59 SOJ, was discovered at Tanglandford Farm.
Police have now confirmed the car had previously been reported stolen from DW Sports Fitness in Aberdeen on October 15.
Detective Inspector Graeme Mackie, who is leading the enquiry, said: “We now know that this white Audi S3 was used in the attacks on the ATMs in Inverurie and Stonehaven during the early hours of Monday.
“We are appealing for anyone who may have seen this car and the occupants at any time since the car was stolen to contact us.
“Local inquiries in Methlick have established that two males who spoke with a Liverpudlian accent were seen in suspicious circumstances in the village on Friday October 25.
“Whilst it is not known if these males are connected to the recent crimes, we are keeping an open mind regarding who is responsible and are working closely with Merseyside Police who is also investigating a series of ATM-related crimes which are very similar to those that have taken place in Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen.”
Damaged was caused to the front of the cash machines in both towns during Monday’s smash and grab attempt.
Police say the crimes could be connected to recent break-ins to the Paul Lawrie Golf Centre, near Banchory, on Saturday October 26, and Murcar Golf Club on Wednesday October 16.
A white Audi A3 was seen in suspicious circumstances on both occasions.
Officers are continuing a search of the woods at Methlick where the car was recovered.
