An Arbroath man had his eyesight saved by a quick-thinking optician.
Robert Stephen, 83, could have lost his vision if it was not for the keen eye of Emma McDonald at the Arbroath Specsavers, who realised that what Mr Stephen thought was grit was actually glaucoma.
Mr Stephen said: “I just thought I had something in my eye but it was quite red and sore so I went to Specsavers. I have been going to the store since it opened and felt confident I was in safe hands.
“I have four children, eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren and it was scary to think that I might not have been able to see them again if the condition had been left untreated and I lost my sight.”
Emma made a call to the ophthalmology department at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee and arranged a laser eye surgery appointment for Mr Stephen that same day.
She said: “Mr Stephen was right to come and see us when he did. It’s so important that if people notice a difference in their eyes that they make an appointment with their optician.”
