Candle lit in Arbroath Library to remember First World War sacrifices
ByGraham Brown
Arbroath library was the setting for Angus’s participation in a single commemorative act of remembrance for the First World War.
In a gesture carried out by civic heads across the UK, Angus Provost Helen Oswald lit a Commonwealth Day candle which will burn for the next 12 months.
Mrs Oswald said the candle is destined to be a reminder to all those who see it of the sacrifices made during the past 100 years through conflicts in which this country has been involved, as well as a symbol of hope of all people working together towards a better understanding.
The event will be repeated each Commonwealth Day.
The ceremony was also attended by Lt Colonel Dan Cheesman of 45 Commando at RM Condor, Arbroath, Monsignor Aldo Angelosanto and former Angus MP and MSP Andrew Welsh.
