A councillor has called for more to be done to tackle the problem of potholes in Montrose.
David May has contacted Angus Council about work needing to be carried out on streets in the town. Complaints from residents on Newhame Road, Charleton Road and Newmanswalls Avenue were brought to his attention.
The council’s overall roads budget for 2014-15 is around £11 million approximately £1m less than the previous year.
Mr May said: “I have contacted the council to highlight the issue, but I can’t blame them for reducing the roads budget. Potholes will become more significant in Montrose while resurfacing will be less common.”
Other areas that have been badly affected by poor road conditions include Dubton Road, Blackfriars Street and Northesk Road.
Glenprosen Street resident and taxi driver Tommy Stewart said he has reported a number of pothole problems to the local authority in recent weeks.
“People seem to think someone else will report the problems,” he said.
“I have reported a hole on a main route to Lochside School in Montrose. Drivers cannot avoid this obstacle unless they go on the wrong side of the road.”
A spokeswoman for Angus Council said the local authority is responsible for nearly 1,100 miles of roads and 500 miles of footway.
She said: “We spend £1.3m per annum on pothole and patching repairs.”
A panel was formed by Angus Council’s scrutiny and audit committee in response to concerns raised about roads maintenance.
The panel aims to gather information, make site visits and conduct interviews to get an idea of the state of potholes in the county.
