An Angus brewery is celebrating after winning a UK award. MR Brewing, based in Old Mill, Kellas, picked up the prize for New Brewery of the Year at a ceremony in Nottingham. The specialist brewers have made a name for themselves by creating ales with more hops than those traditionally drunk in Scotland. “We are very pleased to receive this award,” said MR Brewing co-director Ross Niven. It’s a bit of a surprise to have won.” MR was one of 12 breweries from across the UK and the only Scottish operation that were selected to be featured in the Castle Rock pub during 2013. Ross and business partner Jim Hughan were presented with the top accolade after a customer vote. Ross continued: “Every month a new brewery is featured in the chain of pubs. Customers then vote on the year’s selection in various award categories. “It’s better because it is not someone sitting in an office, but real people who enjoy drinking beer.” Now the Dundee brewers have conquered the Midlands, the pair are looking to expand to other parts of the UK. The next exciting development for the business will be seeing their brews on the shelves of supermarket chain Aldi.
