Monifieth Medieval Fair one of the community’s biggest annual events will move to a new home this weekend.
It has traditionally been located in the town centre but that has constrained what organisers can do and how big the celebrations can be.
The 2015 fair, being held on Sunday, will be at the Riverside Park, next to the Blue Seaway playpark.
The new site has allowed the organisers to construct an arena and stage more activities and attractions, including a birds of prey display, medieval battle re-enactments, a beer tent, music, dancing and archery, as well as the usual funfair and stalls.
Some of the events from the much-missed Lowland Games will also be making a return, while the army will bring a blackout tent to allow children to try out night sights and Scottish Fire and Rescue will have an engine on display.
One of the fair’s organisers, Derek Uchman, said: “The fair has always been popular in Monifieth, with around 2,000 visitors.
“However, we decided to relocate it this year next to the Blue Seaway as it gives us more scope to hold events.
“The Knights of Monymusk will be there all day, and, as well as staging fights in the arena, will have a fortune teller, archery for the children, medieval musical instruments and a ‘crime and punishment’ display, including a pillory, chopping block and axe.
“Falconers Raptor World will also have a selection of their birds on show and will be holding a flying demonstration in the main arena.
“We are also expecting a very special guest, who will be mingling with the crowds.”
There will also be a fancy dress competition, a dog show and judging for the bonniest babies.
The medieval fair runs from 12.30pm until 5pm.
The spectacle has its roots in the first establishment of a community in Monifieth, when Christianity was introduced to the area by St Rule from across the River Tay at St Andrews.
The present fair has been held in the town centre for around 12 years and its new home on the seafront should help it to grow.
