Joan Armatrading performed to a sell-out crowd at Arbroath’s Webster Theatre on Tuesday night.
The singer-songwriter played hits from her extensive back catalogue as part of her solo world tour.
She played electric guitar, 12-string and six-string acoustic guitar and piano during the 90-minute set.
Armatrading walked on stage and joked that she was getting forgetful in her “old age”.
“I actually came out here to do something but I’ve forgotten what it is,” she said.
It was the first of many jokes from the 64-year-old throughout the evening, as she led the audience through a fascinating journey of her career.
She started off with City Girl and had the capacity crowd in the palm of her hand from the first guitar riff. Later in the gig, she introduced a selection of old photographs of herself getting her MBE, meeting Nelson Mandela, performing with Elton John and being immortalised in the pages of her favourite comic The Beano.
Set highlights included Love and Affection, More Than One Kind of Love, In These Times, Drop the Pilot and the encore Willow, which prompted a singalong.
Armatrading is a three-time Grammy Award nominee and has been nominated twice for BRIT Awards as Best Female Artist.
In 1983, she was drawn into the Tom, Dick and Sally strip in The Beano after revealing that she was a big fan of the comic.
Armatrading will be back again in Arbroath on August 12.
