One of Scotland’s oldest whisky distilleries is planning to extend its production capacity.
Whyte and Mackay has proposed an expansion of Fettercairn Distillery in the Mearns, which would “offer more opportunities” and economic benefit to the village.
The distillery was founded by Sir Alexander Ramsay in 1824.
Initially it was run as a farm distillery by tenants of the Fasque estate, then by limited companies before being incorporated into Distillers Company Limited and then Whyte & Mackay in 1973.
Ian Gallacher, of property consultant GVA James Barr, said the 60-square metre expansion would also help tourism in the area.
He said: “Overall, the package of works will redevelop the distillery and offer more opportunities and tourism activity.
“In line with the principles of the local development plan, the increase in production which the proposed works will allow will increase investment in the local area and enhance the visitor opportunities for those members of the public touring the facility.
“The proposed extension and alterations respect the local character, amenity and scale of the surrounding built and natural environment within Fettercairn.
“The building currently operates as a successful distillery, as it has done since 1824, therefore the principle of an extension to this existing building is in our position acceptable.”
