Dunnottar Castle has closed due to storm damage just days after its inclusion in an international Wonder of the World list.
The exposed coastal landmark on the outskirts of Stonehaven, which has weathered countless batterings since the 17th Century, will be closed until operators Dunecht Estates see the scale of the damage.
Storms hit the area at the weekend and dislodged a section of the roof of Benholm’s Lodging, a large building on the main approach.
Head of rural enterprise at Dunecht, Emily Telford, said scaffolding will have to be erected to ensure the site is safe.
She added: “The scaffolding will start going up next week and we anticipate it will take at least a week for that to happen and for checks to be carried out.
“That is what we are planning but if we get bad weather it could take longer.
“We are not happy about it but we have to do this to make sure the castle is safe.”
