A Tayside man was left sickened after finding mysterious sludge in a carton of Tesco pineapple juice.
Jim Robertson, 57, from Arbroath, was left gagging after a piece of slimy, black gunge poured out of his carton of juice shortly after he had drunk some.
The former lifeboat man had been sharing the juice with his daughter while at dinner. Jim took the juice back to Tesco Arbroath, where he bought it, to complain.
“I bought the juice and had a drink out of it when I got home and thought nothing of it,” said Jim, who works as an engineer for an oil company.
“We were having a meal the next day and I poured myself a drink and when I went to pour it this big black thing came sliding out of it.
“My daughter was sick straight away after this huge slimy thing came out. It looked like a slug. It was this fleshy, black and green thing.
“My daughter and I were both ill for two days afterwards.”
Jim said a Tesco representative initially suggested that the item could have been caused by fermentation of the contents of the carton and offered him a full refund and a £25 voucher for using in store.
The carton has now been sent back to Tesco’s labs for further examination, but Jim is still demanding an explanation for what was in his juice.
“The whole thing happened a month ago,” added Jim.
“I want to find out what’s happening.”
Tesco said it was investigating the incident and apologised to Mr Robertson for the ordeal.
A spokesperson for the supermarket chain said: “We have collected the product from the store and we have begun an urgent investigation with the supplier.
“We apologise for any distress caused to Mr Robertson and will keep him updated with the results of our investigation.”
