Carnoustie shopkeeper Alistair Thom

Mr Thom.
Mr Thom.

Alistair William Thom, who operated a DIY shop and picture framing business in Carnoustie for more than 20 years, has died aged 70.

Mr Thom was born in Insch, Aberdeenshire, and moved to Panmure Estates, outside Carnoustie, as a child.

He attended Carnoustie Junior Secondary School and then trained as an apprentice joiner at Keillors of Kellas.

He also worked as a tradesman with his father, who had a business at North Greenford, and at Bell and Sime timber merchants in Dundee.

Mr Thom met his wife-to-be Margaret at St Rules Badminton Club in Monifieth.

They married at St Stephen’s Church in Carnoustie in July 1963 and had two children, Lyne and Allison.

His passion for badminton saw him selected to be an umpire for the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.

In the early 1980s he took over the Fobel DIY shop in Park Avenue, Carnoustie, which he operated until his retirement in 2005.

Mr Thom is survived by wife Margaret, their two daughters and two grandchildren, Kerry and Teagan.
