A man has died after his car collided with a lorry on the A90 south of Brechin.
The 65-year-old was cut free from the wreckage of his Skoda by firefighters but was sadly pronounced dead at the roadside a short time later.
The man, who has not been identified, was driving between Forfar and Brechin when the collision took place near to the Careston junction on Wednesday evening.
His 30-year-old female passenger and the lorry driver were not hurt.
The accident happened at around 6.20pm and forced the closure of the northbound carriageway until 1am while emergency services worked at the scene.
Diversions were put in place as accident investigations were carried out by officers from Police Scotland.
Firefighters used hydraulic cutting equipment to free the man from behind the wheel of his damaged Skoda Fabia.
Police Scotland said initially that the man had sustained “serious” injuries in the accident and was being treated by paramedics.
Despite their best efforts, he died at the scene.
His female passenger was taken by ambulance to Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital.
Investigations into the cause of the latest tragedy are continuing and anyone who may have witnessed the collision is asked to call Police Scotland on 101.
