Drink-driver found asleep in her car after family fall-out

An Angus woman was given a driving ban after police officers found her sleeping in her car under the influence of alcohol.

Carol Walley, of Market Street, Brechin, tested at “almost four times” the limit when woken up by officers in the grounds of a caravan park on May 14.

The 50-year-old appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court and admitted giving a breath test that measured 79 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 22 mics.

The first offender was banned from driving for 16 months and fined £375. The court heard Walley had been drinking earlier in the day and “stupidly” decided to drive after a disagreement with her daughter.

Depute fiscal Hannah Kennedy said: “They had an argument and the accused then left the house.

“The daughter had tried to telephone a taxi but when it had arrived she had already gone.

“She received a text message that caused her concern and so she contacted police.”

When police attended the Nursery Park Caravan Site just after 9pm, they found Walley asleep in her car, smelling of alcohol.

The court heard Walley had driven for around a mile before stopping at the park.

Solicitor Michael Boyd said the cook had been drinking earlier in the day and had made a rash decision to drive after the disagreement.

“There was an element of post-incident drinking as she had drunk part of a bottle of wine before she went to sleep in the car.

“However she is not seeking to minimise her reading,” added Mr Boyd.
