A man has been charged with murder and a woman has been detained after human remains were discovered in Montrose.
Local man Steven Jackson, 39, was arrested following police investigations into the find of remains in Market Street late on Wednesday night.
He is expected to appear at Forfar Sheriff Court on Monday.
There is speculation that the alleged victim is local woman Kimberley McKenzie, a female friend of the murder accused.
In a fresh development on Friday afternoon, police confirmed a woman had also been detained in connection with the investigation.
Detective Superintendent David McLaren said: “As part of our ongoing inquiries into the discovery of human remains in Montrose on Wednesday November 4 we are speaking to a number of people as we conduct our investigation.
“Further to the 39-year-old man who has been charged, a woman is also detained in relation to the incident.
“We continue to carry out forensic work at several addresses in Montrose and those investigations are likely to go on for some considerable time.”
DS McLaren said: “There will be a large police presence in the area for some time as we continue with the complex investigation at a number of properties.
“This is an extremely unusual incident and I would like to reassure the public that it is contained matter. A man has now been charged and is expected to appear in court on Monday.
“At this stage formal identification of the deceased has not been done and further information will be released in due course.”
A block of flats at the corner of Market Street and John Street remained cordoned off today as the police probe continued.
Drains in the immediate vicinity of the flats were examined by police officers during the afternoon.
