An Angus man was banned from driving for two years and fined £400 after stealing and wrecking his cousin’s car while drunk.
Sean Lee McCagh, 19, of Benedict Road, Arbroath, appeared from custody at Arbroath Sheriff Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to taking the car without consent at Strathairlie Avenue, driving while over the limit with 64 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath, driving with a provisional licence and driving without insurance, all on Saturday.
The court heard how McCagh had been out with family and friends celebrating his brother’s birthday. Some of the group went into town to continue the party but an argument developed and McCagh left.
He went back to the house where the group had previously been and took the car.
Police received a phone call at 10.47pm with a report of a one-vehicle road accident before McCagh also called and said he had stolen the car and been in an accident. Officers attended and he failed a breath test and was arrested.
The fiscal added that McCagh was fully cooperative throughout the incident.
