An Angus golf course has become the first in the east of Scotland to launch the rapidly growing sport of footgolf.
Brechin Golf Club has introduced the combination of football and golf in a bid to increase footfall at the course.
Players kick a football into a 21-inch hole in as few shots as possible while negotiating bunkers, trees, water and hills.
The game’s emergence coincided with the decline of the popularity of golf among young people and is now one of the fastest growing sports in the world.
Club manager and PGA golf professional Stephen Rennie said: “With over 200 clubs in England already using their golf courses for this new sport it is only a matter of time before it grows and becomes huge in Scotland too. Brechin is the only course on the east coast of Scotland to be ready to launch this brand new sport.
“As golf club memberships continue to fall across Scotland we at Brechin Golf Club are continuing to diversify in what we offer our members and visitors.
“We believe by doing this more people will visit the club and possibly take up the game.”
The hybrid sport has proved hugely popular with players of both sports, but until now fans have had to travel further afield to play.
You kick off as you would a footballer, but take turns as you would a golfer.
The club hosted an open day yesterday for local schoolchildren to head along and try the sport out.
A public open day will take place on the course tomorrow.
Mr Rennie said: “In the last 12-18 months we have looked at various ways of increasing footfall to the club including opening a fully fitted gym and a state of the art golf simulator.
“We have also just received the go ahead to open our doors to the public to eat and drink at our club and will be launching our own in house restaurant called The Hickory next month.”
Mr Rennie said they want to let people know that golf clubs welcome everyone and “hopefully get more youngsters back into not only golf but sport”.
