‘Totally frightening’ driver stops to change tyre on carriageway of A90

An elderly couple sparked rush-hour panic by stopping to change a tyre on the inside lane of an Angus dual carriageway.
Police rushed to the A90 near Stracathro services at 4.20pm after the pensioners halted on the southbound carriageway.
The force control room was flooded with calls from concerned motorists fearing an imminent accident as traffic thundered past.
It is understood the man stepped out of the car and began efforts to remove the wheel before officers arrived.
The vehicle was then pushed to the side of the busy route where the puncture could be safely dealt with.
Brechin officers PC Billy Rattray and PC Iain MacPherson tweeted to warn drivers of the hazard.
PC Rattray posted: “On A90 where elderly driver has been changing a tyre ON the dual carriageway. #CouldntMakeItUp”
A90 campaigner Jill Fotheringham, who has led the fight for a flyover at nearby Laurencekirk for nine years, said the incident was “totally frightening”.
She said: “I can’t believe an elderly man has just decided to stop on such a dangerous road.
“The A90 is bad enough never mind the additional hazards such as these that drivers have to contend with.”
