An Angus man shot himself twice in the head with an airgun before threatening to kill staff at Ninewells Hospital, a court has heard.
Covered in his own blood and with pitmarks in his head, Steven Ashton, 19, appeared from custody at Forfar Sheriff Court on Monday.
Ashton was taken from his Forfar home to Carseview Medical Centre, in the grounds of Ninewells, on Saturday after he shot himself.
At his Glenogil Terrace home he also threatened to shoot people in the face and kill them and also threatened to kill himself.
Sheriff Kevin Veal conceded an underlying psychological problem prompted Ashton’s actions but said he was cautious of granting bail unless he was satisfied “all the supporting blocks are in place” to ensure rehabilitation.
The sheriff said: “This particular libel, taken in isolation, has all the warning bells going.”
Depute fiscal Hannah Kennedy said she would have applied for an assessment order but legislation would not allow it.
Sheriff Veal granted bail with special conditions and Ashton will be the subject of a curfew between 9pm and 6am each day.
He is to reside at his mother’s house in Glenogil Terrace without “alarming” anyone in his surroundings, “particularly his mother” according to the sheriff.
Previous convictions were admitted and the court heard bail was initially opposed by the Crown, which would have led to Ashton being remanded in Perth.
After a bail address was later accepted, Ms Kennedy said: “I have to say if there’s any repetition of any activity of this kind, bail would be opposed.”
The case was adjourned to October 17 for the preparation of criminal justice social work reports, and a psychological report.
Ashton admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause a reasonable person fear or alarm, in that he shot himself twice in the head with an air weapon, and repeatedly threatened violence to the lieges, threatened to kill them, and threatened to shoot lieges in the face and shoot anyone who entered the property.
He also admitted repeatedly threatening to kill himself.
