A humble delivery driver who pulled a number of Angus residents from a life-threatening flat fire swears he is “no hero.”
Perth man Brian Provan is back to his normal duty as a Parcelforce delivery driver but was still on a high after saving the shocked occupants on Tuesday afternoon when a blaze took hold in a block of flats in Arbroath.
“The boys at work have turned round and said if anyone was to do it, it would be me,” said Brian, 43.
“They all thought it was an April fool’s joke but I told them, just go to The Courier website and you’ll see.
“The guys at the depot are backing me 110% and they knew when they heard it they said they couldn’t believe it was me but they knew it only could be me.
“It’s not stopped today but I’m no hero anyone else would have done the same thing.”
Brian spoke exclusively to The Courier at the scene on Tuesday after rescuing one-legged Kirsty Adam from the flames, which were engulfing her friend’s property in Dishlandtown Street.
Kirsty, 33, from North Yorkshire, was in Arbroath to visit her pal Jacqueline Thompson, who was out the flat at the time.
Brian, a dad of one and originally form Troon, spotted flames licking the windows of the ground floor property and switched into “auto pilot” to save the occupants.
Parcelforce Worldwide Perth Depot Manager, Mel Clark, said: “Brian is an excellent employee. Everyone at Parcelforce Worldwide is very proud of Brian going to the assistance of others at the fire in Arbroath yesterday. We are all relieved that no one was injured and our best wishes go out to the families involved.
“Our people make deliveries across the UK and they are often first at the scene in cases of fire, road accidents, and robbery, and instinctively get involved. It is no surprise at all that Brian has done something so selfless.”
