Arbroath Relay for Life organisers have smashed their expectations with the unveiling of a £45,000 Cancer Research UK cheque.
At the conclusion of a hugely successful September Relay at Arbroath Cricket Club, organising committee chairwoman Alana Loudon said she hoped to be able to sign off from the lead role with a £30,000 total.
The magnificent achievement of raising half as much again has been hailed as a tribute to the town, the hard work of those involved in organising the relay and a spur for those whose sights are already set on the next event in September 2014.
At a celebration party in the town’s Green Street Hall, Alana stunned guests with the handover of the final £45,008 cheque to Richard Cowie of Cancer Research UK (CRUK).
“I’m delighted with the total raised. Even in difficult economic times, Arbroath still comes out to support us,” said Alana, who admitted her final relay was one of mixed emotions.
She will continue her fundraising efforts through events such as Arbroath’s New Year Dook but has wished successor Ian Angus every success as he picks up the relay baton.
Mr Angus revealed the organisation of the 2014 event on September 20/21 is well under way.
“This year’s is a fantastic total, which completely exceeded expectations,” he said.
“It’s phenomenal a town the size of Arbroath can give such a massive boost to Cancer Research UK and every penny counts.”
He added: “Alana will be a hard act to follow but we will work hard to secure her legacy and ensure Arbroath plays its part in raising vital funds for CRUK research.
“We’re in the process of putting a new committee together and in a fortnight’s time all the team captains from this year have been invited to an ideas session, looking forward to what we can do next year.
“We have two teams registered already, with four or five already fundraising towards 2014 and that is testament to the great support we had at this year’s relay and the atmosphere there.
“The website is live for registration and we are always looking for new support, as relay teams or from people willing to get involved in the organising committee.”
