ByGraeme Strachan
Around 20 firefighters were called out to a blaze in a grain drier near Laurencekirk in the early hours.
Crews from Laurencekirk, Inverbervie, Brechin and Central fire station were involved in assisting the farmer in removing 30 tonnes of barley from the 30ft grain drier.
Donning breathing apparatus firefighters used a hose reel jet to tackle the fire which was smouldering inside the drier.
It was a labour intensive operation for the crews using ladders to access hatches at various heights to extinguish pockets of fire.
They also used a thermal imaging camera to detect further hot spots.
Crews arrived at around 12.45am and remained on scene until 5am making sure all pockets of fire were extinguished.
