The organisers of Brechin’s Christmas in the City event were on cloud nine after STV weatherman Sean Batty turned on their tree lights.
Thousands turned out for the day-long event on Saturday, which included live music, Santa’s grotto, a farmers’ market, mini pantomime and craft fair.
The event was organised by Bravo Brechin, a business-led group that has organised a number of events this year.
Graeme Gove, from the group, said: “People were disappointed that Brechin High Street didn’t have a Christmas tree last year, so we set out to rectify that.
“The tree was donated by Dalhousie Estates and erected by volunteers. It’s great to see Brechin so busy. It’s been a lot of work to put on but this makes it all worthwhile.
“I just don’t know how we are going to top it next year.”
Prior to the switch-on, Sean visited several shops to judge the window display competition, which was won by Small World Nursery in Bank Street.
The television presenter said he was impressed by Brechin’s community spirit on his first visit.
Sean, who wore a novelty Christmas jumper, said: “It was great to go round the shops and judge their window displays and see so much happening.
“I’ve never been to Brechin before and was impressed that there are so many nice shops and friendly folk. Anyone who knows me knows that I’m obsessed with Christmas and I can’t wait to put all my decorations up at home.
“I wish I could switch Christmas lights on throughout the year as I really enjoy these events. I would have liked to have seen some snow but you can’t have everything.
“It looks like the weather’s going to turn colder next week and there might even be some snow as we head towards Christmas, fingers crossed.”
Before turning on the lights, he videoed the huge crowd shouting: “Merry Christmas Brechin.” He later posted the footage to his 70,000 Twitter followers.
Among the groups taking part in the event were Brechin Brass Band, the high school band and the town’s panto group.
Bravo Brechin has also organised an Easter fun day, a cartie race and a Harley Davidson event this year.
Councillor Mairi Evans said: “The retailers have been building a series of events throughout the year, which have creating a real profile for Brechin.”
Councillor Bob Myles added: “Christmas in the City is a tremendous initiative by the Brechin businesses, who have a very enthusiastic committee.
“The events they put on throughout the year have really put Brechin back on the map. “It gives the place a feel-good factor.”
