Montrose Sports Centre to close while pool plumbing problems are fixed
ByGraham Brown
The problem-hit sports centre in Montrose will close later this week to tackle plumbing issues that have plagued the multi-million-pound facility in recent weeks.
Shocked visitors, including swimming gala participants, watched in horror as overhead waste pipes burst twice at the Marine Avenue complex, flooding the foyer area with sewage.
The first incident took place on February 7 at the conclusion of a Midlands district gala.
Exactly a fortnight later, when another gala was just about to get under way, the overhead pipe burst and caused another flood near the ground-floor reception.
Deep clean operations and emergency repairs were mounted following both incidents at the £9 million showpiece facility, which opened in late 2012.
Council chiefs have now confirmed that the centre will shut on Friday to allow work to be carried out to strengthen the pipework.
On its Facebook page, Angus Leisure apologises for any inconvenience and says staff will be available on reception to take incoming calls.
