Further six months for Angus man after latest headbutt case

Further six months for Angus man after latest headbutt case

An Angus man who was remanded for three years last month will serve another six months due to a catalogue of offences “catching up with him”.

Connor McGregor was detained following a Dundee trial that found him guilty of choking his girlfriend until she nearly lost consciousness and breaking her arm in Arbroath.

The 21-year-old has now appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court and was sentenced for headbutting two men at the Commercial Inn, Arbroath, to their injury on February 27 and 28 last year.

He also admitted causing a breach of the peace in the town on March 15, following which officers found him tangled in a fence.

Depute fiscal Jill Drummond said McGregor was with a man and woman around midnight, and they had planned to go to a local nightclub but found they had no money for a taxi when it arrived.

McGregor, of Greenlaw Place, Carnoustie, was “heavily intoxicated through alcohol” and he began arguing with the woman.

Police were then called.

Ms Drummond said: “As the PCs arrived, the accused was traced in a back garden. He had got stuck in a low-level wooden fence.”

It took three officers to subdue the accused, who “struggled violently”.

Solicitor Nick Whelan said an argument had arisen over a love triangle between the parties.

He said: “Mr McGregor understood (the other man) was her ex-partner.

“It became apparent that she was having relations with these two gentlemen at the same time.

“He felt he’d been set up and ran. Mr McGregor recognises there’s no alternative today.”

The original three-year custodial sentence will be added to by six months, and McGregor will be supervised for a year.

Sentencing the accused, Sheriff Pino Di Emidio said: “In effect, the sheer volume of offending has caught up with him, along with the escalating severity of the offences.”

The court in Dundee previously heard McGregor attacked his girlfriend as they walked home from a pub along Wardmill Road, Arbroath.

The pair argued and when she tried to walk away McGregor chased and repeatedly pushed her, causing her to fall.

She got up and McGregor pushed her against metal railings on a bridge, grabbed her by the throat and strangled her until she could not breathe and began to lose consciousness.
