Thugs who tied a rope across a rural road at the weekend have been told they could have killed someone.

A car was damaged after hitting the obstacle, which was tied to a road sign on the Meigle to Newtyle road at 11.45pm on Saturday.

It is understood that the driver of the vehicle suffered from shock but wasotherwise uninjured.

However police say the incident which took place near the Newbigging junction could have had “fatalconsequences” for road users.

The incident has outraged councillors on both sides of the Perthshire/Angus border.

Alan Grant, deputy leader of Perth and Kinross Council, branded theculprits “foolish”.Do you know the car driver? Please contact The Courier on 01382 575130 or email online@thecourier.co.ukHe said: “It’s totally irresponsible.I would think it was done by people from somewhere else I wouldn’t think it would be someone local.

“There’s been nothing of this nature in the last 20 years it’s outrageous.”

Iain Gaul, leader of Angus Council, said that someone could easily have been killed by the actions.

He said: “I am amazed at the idiocy of some people it is beyond belief that anyone could be so stupid.

“It is extremely dangerous. It was a car that hit the rope but if it had been a motorbike they would be dead.”

A Police Scotland spokeswomanconfirmed they were investigating and appealed for witnesses.

She said: “I can confirm that officers are making inquiries into a road traffic incident whereby a vehicle was travelling on the B954 Meigle to Newtyle road and was damaged as a result of colliding with a rope that had been tied across the road.

“The bonnet and driver’s side wing mirror were both damaged as a result of the incident.

“Activity such as this is extremely dangerous to all road users and could have fatal consequences. Fortunately in this incident no one has been injured, but the outcome could have been far worse.”
